| Welcome to our counseling service. Your counselor, Bertha Cohen, has practiced as a social worker in the health field for many years in South Africa and Canada, working with people from many different cultural groups. Bertha works with her clients from a strengths-based perspective, seeing the world through their eyes. She regards the therapeutic process as an equal partnership and takes into consideration the cognitive, emotional, behavioural and spiritual aspects of the individual. The overall aim is to strengthen the client's inner resources in therapy so that outer circumstances can more easily be changed or dealt with. An eclectic approach, incorporating humanistic, cognitive, brief, and transpersonal therapies, and energy work - as is appropriate for the client - is used.

Bertha has considerable expertise in grief counselling. She has also worked extensively with people who have experienced pregnancy loss and infertility. She helps her clients with personal growth, self esteem, cultural adjustment (including immigration), life transitions and women's issues including pregnancy and adjustment to parenthood. She also counsels couples, people with depression, medical conditions and physical disabilities. Bertha has considerable experience facilitating groups and workshops. Bertha has completed levels one and two of Satir brief therapy, levels one and two of Therapeutic Touch, level one of the Eye Movement Integration Therapy, and training by Dr David Burns on cognitive behavioural therapy. Bertha keeps up to date with current theory by reading, attending seminars and workshops. Bertha was nominated for the Excelsior Award in South Africa for excellence in the field of physical disability. She received an Education Award of Excellence from BC Women's Hospital in Vancouver.
